Masskara Festival in Bacolod, Negros Oriental, Philippines

Masskara Festival (Bacalod – Negros Oriental)

Born at a time of tragedy and economic dislocation, the MassKara Festival is a collective declaration of hope against all odds by the people of Bacolod City. On the year the passenger vessel MV/ Don Juan sank, and the sugar industry – Negros Occidental’s monocrop – collapsed, the people of Bacolod City led by its artist, civic citizens and local officials decided to rally and celebrate, to declare they will survive no matter what. Amidst the doom and gloom, they decided to put on smiling masks and dance in the streets.
